Suriname is a land of ethnic, cultural and religious diversity. Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and other religious groups have harmoniously integrated into the collective psyche of Suriname, a psyche both intriguing and overwhelmingly complex. Significantly, Suriname has found a way to weave a fragile, yet enduring, matrix of reconciliation, healing and wholeness.
Embedded in this land is a cultural mix of healing traditions from varyingly different cultures, including the Dutch Boeres, Amerindians, Creoles, Javanese, Hindustanis, Maroons, Jews, Lebanese, Europeans, and Chinese. Each of these healing traditions offers rich archetypal knowledge of native practices that can inform modern medicine and medical practices.
Our study tour will explore these native healing traditions and cultures of Suriname through the discerning lens of Jung’s Analytical Psychology. Analytical Psychology offers a paradigm for the integration of opposites and wholeness in individuals and cultures. This paradigm will be explored, within the context of Suriname, as it relates to us as individuals and to the greater society.

Learning Objectives for 15 Hours of CE Credit
1. Introduction to the basic tenets of Jung’s Analytical Psychology.
2. Discuss the individuation process of individuals and cultures; the macrocosm and microcosm as mirror images of the same phenomena.
3. Outline the individuation process in the Suriname culture.
4. Explore traditional healing practices of Suriname’s various subcultures.
5. Review these healing practices from a Jungian perspective.
6. Understand how the natural environment informs Suriname’s native healing practices, traditions and rituals.
7. Dream Group Matrix: Study group participants will be invited to gift their dreams to the study group. Explorations of these collective dreams may yield rich soul dividends to all participants.

The Surname Cultural Expedition learning experience will include presentations by Jungian analyst Ashok Bedi, M.D., as well as guest presenters from Suriname with Dr. Bedi as moderator. The learning objectives may be modified to assimilate synchronistic opportunities that are consistent with exploring the mind-body-soul healing matrix of the native and cultural traditions of Suriname from an analytical perspective. The Continuing Education component of the study tour is sponsored by the Carl G. Jung Institute of Chicago and offers fifteen hours of Continuing Education Credits (CE Credits).
